Chi-Ping Dance Group (CPDG) | A well-known non-profit organization
founded in 1984 that aims to promote multiculturalism and the
richness of Chinese heritage through Chinese dance. Over the
years, CPDG has been involved in numerous multicultural events
and governmental ceremonies throughout Canada and abroad.
Chi-Ping Dance Group offers a variety of dance culture which
includes:

BRIEF HISTORY
Chi-Ping Dance Group has hosted several public shows across Toronto
and provided opportunities for young Canadians to better understand
Chinese culture and enhance their performing skills through different
performances in classical, folk and contemporary dance styles.
The Chi-Ping Dance Group has hosted several public symposiums
and workshops on Chinese dance with guest artists from renowned
Chinese dance companies and famous dance artists from Hong Kong
and China.
Members have actively participated in numerous multicultural
festivals held across Canada and abroad, e.g. Sudbury, Ont.;
Saint John's, N.B.; Beijing, China; Mexico, Hong Kong, Macau,
etc. and fundraising events for charitable organizations, such
as Sick Kids' Hospital Foundation, United Way, Heart & Stroke
Foundation, Yee Hong Wellness Centre, Mon Sheong Foundation,
etc.
Chi-Ping Dance Group not only promotes student participation
in cultural activities but is dedicated to teach, support and
uncover the special talents of young dancers in obtaining their
goals in pursuing their dance interests under the direction of
professional and first-class instructors.
MISSION
- Promote the richness of Chinese
cultural heritage through the art of Chinese dances.
- Introduce Chinese dances as
a means of promoting cultural exchange between people of different
cultural backgrounds, which ultimately contributes to multiculturalism
in Canada.
- Provide high standard and
quality dance education for all age groups, including children,
youth and adults, taught by an up-to-date, knowledgeable and
caring faculty.
IN THE COMMUNITY, COUNTRY
AND WORLD
- Invited to participate in
several workshops in Beijing, Yunnan, and Shenzhen in China
- In 2000, represented Canada
at the International Folklore Festival held in Zacatecas, Mexico
- In 2004, invited by Dr. Stanley
Ho to perform in Macau, Hong Kong, and Zhong Shan, China
- Municipal and provincial authorities
have recognized members for their outstanding volunteering achievements
and participation in numerous fundraising events since 1994
- Countless awards for excellent
choreography and performances in Canadian and North American
dance competitions

Chi-Ping Lau
Ms Chi-Ping Lau, a choreographer,
dancer and dance educator, is the founder and the Artistic Director
of Chi-Ping Dance Group. She graduated from Laban Center, University
of London, and is a member of the Imperial Society of Teachers
of Dancing, the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists, the Canadian
Dance Teachers' Association and a former director of Community
Folk Art Council of Metro Toronto.
Ms Lau studied Chinese dance
under the renowned professional dance artist, Mr Sai-Fun Ng;
ballet and National folk dances under Mr Stephen Kwok and Ms
Pearl Chan. While in Hong Kong, Ms Lau taught dance instructors,
and instructed in dance programs at the Universities. She participated
in the special training workshops for overseas Chinese dance
teachers in Beijing held by Ministry of Cultural Dept of China
in 1993.
Ms Lau has been presented with
an award of Outstanding Achievement by the Chinese Community
Centre in 1986. In 1992, she received an award of recognition
from the City of Scarborough for promoting dancing in the community.
In 1997, she was awarded the "Civic Award of Merit"
from the City of Scarborough for accomplishment in the dance
field of Cultural Achievement & Community Activity.
CPDG Cultural Arts Association
CPDG Cultural Arts Association
(CCAA) is a non-profitable organization established since 2009
that promotes and educates the Chinese cultural arts to the community
through engagements and events. After years of being trained
in Chinese Dance together, a group of dancers from Chi-Ping Dance
Group gathered to share their passion for the Chinese cultural
arts and to promote it to the community, led by their enthusiasm
for dance, music, theatre and hosting functions and events.
OBJECTIVES
- To serve the community through
organizing and participating in charitable events.
- To work in conjunction with
other organizations, groups, and individuals to promote Chinese
culture.
- To act as a forum for Chinese
cultural education.
EVENTS & ACTIVITIES
Since establishment in October
2009, CCAA has:
- Hosted a Chinese New Year
workshop featuring Chinese Arts & Crafts, Kung Fu, Tai Chi,
and Chinese Dance
- Hosted Strokes of Rhythm demonstrations
and workshops featuring Chinese Painting and Chinese Dance, presented
by professional artists as part of International Dance Day projects
organized by DanceTO
- Hosted a Cantonese Opera Workshop
demonstrated and presented by Starlight Cantonese Opera highlighting
what Cantonese Opera is about and hands-on experience with props
- Hosted an Open House Chinese
Dance Dress Rehearsal for Culture Days, a collaborative pan-Canadian
volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation
and engagement in arts and culture
- Offered a Chinese Dance program
at Hong Fook Mental Health Association
- Performed for Daily Bread
Food Bank's 5th Annual Gala
- Supported and performed for
Markham Mayor's Youth Task Force Youth Week Kick-Off in support
of Childhood Cancer Foundation
- Participated in Pluralism
in Cultural Arts symposium hosted by University of Toronto Scarborough
- Performed for Asian Heritage
Month at University of Toronto
- Organized members' trips to
see the following:
- Terracotta Warriors Exhibit at ROM
- Colourful Guizhou, an award-winning show from China
- Dream of the Red Chamber, a famous dance-drama based on one
of the four greatest written works in Chinese classical literature
- Chinese Rock-Musical Monkey King
- Cock Pit by Wen Wei Dance Troupe from Vancouver.
